It’s all about connections!  We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.  Well, if you’re looking to increase your business’ bottom line, now more than ever the WHO you know coupled with who knows you is what’s most important to helping you increase your business.

In today’s struggling economy many businesses are trying new approaches to promoting their business.  Gone are the days of large advertising budgets for newspapers, radio, TV and other forms of advertising.

Networking is fast becoming the new advertising venue.  Networking groups are popping up everywhere.  There are networking events to meet every schedule.

Networking groups are hosting breakfast, lunch, dinner and after hours. All of these allow you to market your business to like minded individuals.

Can you effectively network your business online?  Facebook, Twitter, My Space, and all the sites dedicating themselves to social networking are also important venues to help get the word out on your business.  You can always drop a comment on one of these sites telling your friends what’s new with your business; you can invite your online contacts to webinars or meetings you may be hosting.

What you can and should do is become actively involved in the business and social aspect of “event networking”.  Actually attending as many networking events as your schedule will allow.  It’s cheap and can be very effective.  Many networking groups that meet either weekly or monthly often do not require membership.  You can attend and determine if this is a group you want to network with on a regular basis.  Groups that require membership may allow you to attend and pay only the one time guest rate. It’s a very inexpensive way to see if this is where you want start building a network base.

Be sure and check out the local South Florida Chamber of Commerce in your area. Many chambers offer monthly networking breakfasts, luncheons and after hour opportunities.  This can also be a good place to hear great guest speakers.  Many guest speakers are great information resources and can help you grow your business.  Do you have to join the chamber to attend these events, not necessarily, many offer non-member rates or guest rates.  Generally,  you can attend as many events as you like you just have to pay the guest rate.   You can pick and choose the events that interest you.      

You can meet the people you need to meet and you can start to build alliances with other networkers.  Building relationships one on one are what making connections are all about.  Making connections are what makes you money!

Networking In Real Life â?? The Old Fashioned Way

While I hope you are successful at your online business, if it doesn’t pan out and you have to resort to a “real” job for a while, it will be helpful the steps for a networking process that can lead to long term working relationships.

If you have a service oriented business, then online marketing might not do you much good. If you sell your skills and services by the hour to a local market, then one of your best marketing opportunities might be the local Chamber of Commerce and word of mouth.

 In the brick and mortar world, businesses are built one relationship at a time. All relationships are built one interaction at a time.

Here is what you need to know if you have to make the switch from the speed of light (online networking) to the speed of one conversation at a time.

#1 Take Your Time – I remember the first time I went to a Chamber of Commerce meeting. I didn’t know anyone, I wandered around with a drink in my hand and tried not to look too stupid or very lonely. It took several months of that before I started meeting a few people. So take your time and put up with the loneliness.

#2 Don’t Get In A Hurry – When you start getting to know people that might turn into future clients, don’t be in too much of a hurry to tell them all about your business. It smells of self-interest and desperation when people want to talk exclusively about themselves  - whether it’s their hobby, their problems or their business. Let it come up naturally in the conversation. People remember good conversations, and they will remember what you do.

#3 Listen to People – Find out a little bit about the person you are talking to. It’s practical – gives you something to ask them about the next time. It also sets you apart from the crowd – count how many people ask you something about yourself the next time you go to a networking meeting!

#4 Show Your Appreciation for People – After you’ve gotten to know some people and you see them on a regular basis, take some time now and then to tell them thank you. If nothing else, know them has given you something to look forward to when you go to business networking meetings!

#5 Develop Thick Skin – It IS a networking situation. People have different ideas as to how long they should spend talking to each potential client or customer. If the person you are talking to wants to move on, make it easy for them.

#6 Know Your Limits – People seem to have different social life thresholds. Some people are capable of maintaining literally dozens of relationships with little loss in quality. Other people (like myself) are better equipped to maintain a few relationships. Know yourself and if you have reached your limit, then either quit networking, or if you have grown to enjoy the crowd, then keep it light and superficial with everyone except your circle. You’ve earned it.

Networking Is More Than Just Handing Out Business Cards

At a Chamber of Commerce Business Card Exchange several years ago a well-dress woman walked up to me, business card in hand and, in perfect form held it in both hands in front of me, gesturing for me to take it. I took the card from her and smiled. She looked up and in a polite voice, said “Thank you,” and walked away. How sad. Here was this obviously well-intentioned woman, who most likely owned an interesting business but never learned what to do at a card exchange. Somewhere she bought into the idea that you were suppose to hand out as many business cards in as little time as possible. Clearly, this does nothing but waste business cards. Great for card businesses, not so great for yours.
The other extreme is the person who spends the entire time at a card exchange talking to the same individual, sometimes even people from their own company. Again, this is quite unproductive. The purpose of a business card exchange is to get to meet new people in a pleasant atmosphere.
While there are many good books to help you hone your networking skills including, Sue Roane’s How to Work a Room, the essence of networking is quite simple.
Businesses run on relationships. I’ve always felt that everything that we do is about personal relationships and a business just gives us a playing field on which to do it.
Following that theme, growing your business is about developing and nurturing relationships and card exchanges and similar networking events are really the starting point to begin what will hopefully become a mutually rewarding relationship.
Since your time is limited, it is a good idea to spend only a short time speaking with people, especially those you already know. If you feel a resonance with someone you’re talking with, make arrangements to follow-up your connection at a later date and move on to meet someone else. I’m sure the shy looking person in the corner, who is probably there for the very first time, has something interesting to say. Why not go over and extend your hand.
The other big faux paus I see over and over again, are the people who approach the networking meeting with a “me, me, me” attitude. A better approach is to learn about the other person first. You then have the option of explaining how what you do might be of interest to them. This establishes a stronger platform for communications, for as speaking legend Zig Zigler says, “You get what you want by helping other people get what they want.”
Care about the other person
There are better ways to network and meet prospective business contacts. For openers, (no pun intended) people are more responsive if you first show some interest in them and what they do. There is an old cliché that says we have one mouth and two ears for a reason. If you listen more than you talk, you will automatically find people more interested in talking with you and being around you.
Marketing guru, Jay Abraham, once said that “Discovery is the fuel of competitive advantage.” Get curious. Become interested in other people and what makes them tick. Really care about the other person. If you take the time to investigate, you will find that even those people who appear quite ordinary have a story to tell. If you show an interest in them and their lives, you will not only increase your chances of doing business with them but you may gain a friend as well.
How do you do that?
When you do introduce yourself, do so in a way that states the benefit of doing business with you. Saying “Hi, my name is Mary and I sell insurance” is not very exciting. However, if you were to say, “My name is Mary and I help people prepare for the uncertainty that may be in their future.” This causes the other person, if they are at all curious, to ask, “How do you do that?” At this point, you have opened the door for a further explanation or “commercial” for your business. You can go on to explain the benefits of your products and services.
As an exercise, devise three or four ways to introduce your business. Let each one focus on a different benefit of your product or service. Test each of them at your next networking event.
Remember: people do not buy products or services, they buy benefits and solutions.The more you focus on communicating the benefits gained from using your products or services, the more you will benefit from the increase in business.
With prospecting new business becoming more and more difficult, a personal relationship is even more important and the Chamber of Commerce Card Exchange offers the perfect playground for you do it, besides the food is usually pretty good too.

Business leaders from across Cheshire took it all in their stride when they went barefoot at a network meeting.

 

East Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise held its regular networking event at Barefoot’s newly-opened multi-million pound showroom and conference centre in the county – and visitors were politely asked to lose their shoes on entry.

 

The conference centre is a barefoot-only zone. All staff who work at the centre do so barefoot – although the company does provide extra fluffy socks for visitors to enable them to get to grips with the concept.

 

David Watson, leader of East Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, organised the event. He said: “It was certainly an unusual thing to do.

 

“At first, people were quite shocked that they were leaving their shoes off, and it really took them out of their comfort zone, but they quickly adapted.

 

“What was remarkable was that being together barefoot broke down some barriers. People engaged in conversation freely and it made for a great atmosphere. It was a really innovative and dynamic day.”

 

The Barefoot business – home of the luxury Floor Couture brand – is the brainchild of Dawn Gibbins MBE, the current SHE international business woman of the year and a former Veuve Clicquot business woman of the year.

 

Dawn, ‘the barefoot entrepreneur,’ said: “It was an absolutely fabulous meeting. I definitely think barefoot networking is the way forward.”

Use Online Social Networking to Attract New Clients to Your Black Business

Thank you for choosing to read this article. As we all know, new clientele is the lifeblood for Black businesses. Depending on a small handful of clients is extremely risky and often detrimental. Many Black business owners often find it difficult to diversify and grow their clientele. With social networking online you can promote your business and attract new clients.

Because you are a Black business owner, who wants to learn how to use social networking as a way to promote your business and drive much needed traffic to your web site this is a good starting point for you.

It is obvious that all Black business owners face challenges. A typical challenge is how to get new clientele using a limited amount of resources. Social networking online is great, because it can be done for free and you can do it without having a massive staff.

Let’s dispel a few myths before moving forward. Social networking will not make you a millionaire over night; but with continual dedication, you will begin to see the benefits. So, be patient, stay motivated and stick with it!

What Is Online Social Networking

You may have heard of online social networking, but like many Black business owners you don’t really know how to define it. We define online social networking as simply being a virtual community of individuals who share similar interests. Perhaps the most popular example of such a community is MySpace.

Social networking online is very similar to word-of-mouth marketing. But unlike word-of-mouth marketing, you can do it from the comforts of your home, at any time during the day. Because it is so convenient, it has become one of the most popular ways to network. Social networking online also allows you to interact with millions of diverse internet users from all over the world. So, if you are in the United States, you can use social networking sites to develop business relationships or attract new clientele from a variety of countries.

A Word Of Caution

As always when using the internet there are some precautions you will take to keep you safe from online predators. Just like when you meet people at a real life business event, school, or work, you are advised to proceed with caution online. Always be aware of your surroundings and who you are talking to when online. By doing so, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online.

Social Networking Your Grand Opening Through Facebook

In the 20th century, people are now connecting through social networks. Facebook, being the leader in industry, is connecting people, colleagues, reuniting classmates and business associates using the Internet. Let’s use this social network to announce to people who have a personal interest, business relationship or similar interests that your business is having a grand opening. Considering many businesses are started by people who are leaving one industry to reinvent themselves in another, the wealth of resources, connection and personal relations built over these years of business interaction are severed instantly once the individual boxes up their office cubical. Many of these connections would like you to succeed in your new business venture and would be willing spread the word through their network of your grand opening.

Make it an Activity

Facebook allows users to post what they are doing right now! Let people know that you are stocking shelves for the grand opening, booking grand opening entertainment, creating a press release, talking to local news agencies and businesses about the grand opening. Keep the post current and build to the grand opening date. Making announcement days before is less effective because the social networking is not fully developed. Allow the anticipation to build. Pretty soon, friends will be contact you and asking “Are you ready for your big grand opening?”

Start the Networking

Facebook.com, is the most popular, free social networking environment, and is one of the easiest to find and acquire contacts or in social networking terms, friends. First, create an account making sure you use your real name, unlike Internet forums or bulletin boards, where fake names are common. The power behind Facebook is its ability to connect people by schools, companies, interests, hobbies and relies on you to recognizing individuals by name.

Second, enter your personal information. Personal information is the key to complete social networking. The more information supplied in these areas allows you and others to seek out individuals with the same desires and interests. For example, if you are leaving the aviation field and opening up a hobby shop, include in your personal information that your hobby is fling. Facebook will link you automatically to other individuals (friends) who share the same interest. This link to new “friends” will allow you to build a social network that you can announce your grand opening celebrations.

Connect with past classmates and colleagues in the same manner. Once you fill-out the school information, Facebook will search its database of schools and classmates in your graduating year. Many of these people will quickly seek you out and want to know what is happening in your life. Inform them about your grand opening and invite them to come see you at the grand opening.

Expand Social Networking through the Company Encourage employees to create a Facebook page. Once created, ask them to make an announcement in their network of friends about the grand opening. The goal is to use the network to spread the word about the grand opening. Pictures can be uploaded; announcement can be posted along with a shout out of how the progress and development of the grand opening is going. Lastly, make sure you follow up with pictures of people who come from the network of friends. People who can’t attend that day will be interesting in seeing the pictures and will participate in the grand opening through your pictures.

Don’t put the Camera Away Keep the digital camera ready after the grand opening, you may find many network friends will show up late in the week and you can capture the moment and share it with the network of friends who help make your grand opening a success. It will take a little work and time to build the social network of friends, but that work will make your grand opening and business stronger.

What networking group should I join?

I often get asked this question and my answer is always the same: it depends. There are a lot of great networking groups out there but not all of them will work for you. Below, I outline in my opinion the strengths and weaknesses of some of the common groups.

BNI – BNI is a great group and many of my friends benefit greatly from their involvement. BNI holds weekly meetings and limits membership to one person from each profession. BNI works because of the structure. You are committed to attending weekly meetings and are expected to pass referrals to other members of the group. If you cannot commit to the weekly meeting (most of them occur at 7am) then you shouldn’t join. I find that my friends who are committed to attending every week and pass a lot of referrals are successful with the group. BNI has chapters in most cities and towns. I would recommend you visit each chapter a few times before you join because each chapter has its own character. You may like some groups more than others. The membership fee for BNI is around 0.00 and most group charge room fees of about 0.00.

Chamber of Commerce – I have a few friends who benefit from being a member of the Chamber of Commerce. You need to be committed to attending the networking events and getting involved in the Chambers committees. Please don’t join the Chamber of Commerce and think that you will get business just from being a member, no networking group works that way. You should attend a few networking events before you join to make sure it’s the right group for you. I have found that each Chamber is slightly different and has different members. Take a look at the member list to make sure your target markets are members. Membership fees are around 0.00

Local groups – We have seen a rise in networking groups forming that focus on serving one city or town. I am a big fan of these groups and think that they are the ideal for people looking to target a city or town or are new to networking. I find the atmosphere to be relaxed and the people to be friendly. The membership fees vary.

As you can see there is no right answer to the question and just because a networking group works for your friend doesn’t mean it will work for you. Before you join any group ask yourself a simple question “Am I committed to being involved in this group”. If you are not willing to be involved then you shouldn’t join. My friends who are successful at networking are successful because they are committed to being involved.

Renowned as Sydney¹s first beachside cinema, Flickerfest kicks off the (Australian) summer cinema season outdoors under the stars at Bondi Beach, January 8-17, screening short films from Australia, and the rest of the world, in a relaxed summer environment.
